Having spent the afternoon in Auvers-sur-Oise, culminating iat Van Gogh’s grave, we were moved by the man, his art and his tragic end. I noted this beautiful door knocker, the bold colors a tribute to the his art.

While in Quebec, I stopped in the gift shop in the Le Château Frontenac Hotel. On display was an outrageous vinyl patterned chair holding a tote bag filled with tulips and in the background red satin shoes with a negligee. I loved the unusual combination of colorful patterns, textures and objects. Art is everywhere you look!

Kensington, Maryland, is known for its antique shops. Displays of like objects attract the shopper like bees to flowers. This display of bangles took me back to the 60’s and 70”s. It was fun capturing the light and colors of the orange faceted bracelet.

Sometimes I rely on the talents of window dressers to help me create my paintings. This was a clever display in a tea shop with the pitcher (suspended by fishing line) appearing to float above the stacked tea cups. After asking permission, I brought in a couple of high intensity lights and lit the scene, capturing all that gold filigree with my iPhone. Like a parakeet, I’m attracted to anything that is sparkly.

This was painted from a photo of a display during a presentation on the history of tulips as we prepared to leave our river cruise to tour Keukenhof Gardens. I did not have my camera with me but asked this older distinguished German gentleman if he would take a picture of it and email to me. This small gesture began a 12 year relationship with the couple. We ended up vacationing with them and visiting them in Florida. I painted it for my own bedroom but wanted to enter into the Kensington juried show when it was barely dry. To my dismay it had not but was SOLD within the first 30 minutes the show was open to the public and I didn't even have a photo or print of it. Fortunately, the purchaser kindly allowed me to borrow it from her and have it photographed and printed. I now have the print hanging in my bedroom.

After a damp tour of the gardens in Monet’s beloved Giverny, we left the retail space just as the sun finally emerged. The staff had just laid out this beautiful tablescape with a gorgeous silk peony. Without thinking I snapped a pic (along with about 200 others taken that day). Returning home I kept going back to that scene, finally deciding to paint it, super-sized. The original hangs above my fireplace and it brings back memories of a wonderful trip.
